Labor Project
During the Fall semester of our Junior year, we studied the history of labor and globalization. To show what we learned, we split into groups to make podcasts. My podcast isn't the best and I think my group mates would agree because our files kept getting corrupted, but we managed to make it through and I was able to fix the files.
REFLECTION QUESTIONS
REFLECTION QUESTIONS
- What was the greatest challenge you faced in the project and what did you do to overcome that challenge?
My greatest challenge was probably working with someone I never worked with before.Because Im shy around new people and don't talk because I'm afraid to say something wrong and mess up. - If you could go back and do the project again what would you do differently and why?
If I could go back and do the project again I would change the change the Project Managers because to me I thought we were really unprepared with time to set up and it had to much stress on the others. - What is the greatest insight you gained about the state of labor issues today?
The greatest insight I gained about state of labor is knowing without the labor laws minimum wage would be unfair and children would still be forced in to labor. - What are you most proud of in your project?
What I was most proud of this project was making new friends because I made new friends and learned how to make friends by meeting new people I never worked with like Brian for example.I look forward to more projects like this.
- Explain one way you grew as a student during this project. It is not when we are comfortable and know how to do a task that we grow, it is often when we are the most challenged or have struggled through something that we grow. So what will you be better at now?
One way I grew as a student during this project was socially because I grew from because independent and never working with others to working with other people and becoming more dependent and helping others when they need it and now i have more friends. So I will be better at working in groups and leading them if they need me to if someone is not there to lead the group.
Food Ethic Project & Essay
For this project, we examined the ethics of food- what we eat, why we eat it, how we grow it, and how all of those things affect the earth. This is the essay that I wrote to discuss my personal food ethic.

Food Ethics Essay
You are what you eat. That doesn’t mean that you’re an apple if you eat an apple, it means that what you put in is what you get out. For example, if a person were to only eat Twinkies and drink Mountain Dew, that person would become overweight and probably diabetic. But, if a person were to eat a balanced diet, they would not only feel good, but they would be likely to live a longer and healthier life. I’ve known since I was in middle school that we get benefits from what we eat, but I’d never thought of what our food and the way that I eat can have consequences that are bigger than just my body.
I have always tried to eat healthy. I learned about balanced diets in physical education when I was in middle school. My teacher, Mr. Baker, taught me about the food pyramid and how to use it. The food pyramid consists of groups of types of food including: grains, fruits, vegetables, meats, dairy, and fats, salts, and sweets. The idea behind the food pyramid is that you should eat more of what’s at the bottom (grains and cereal), and less of what’s at the top (fats, salts, and sweets). The food pyramid also helps to create a balanced meal. For example, you might have a slice of pizza with pepperoni, cheese, and pineapple with a salad made of different kinds of lettuce, some tomatoes, carrots, cucumber, and celery with ranch dressing. If we look closely at this meal, we can see each of the parts of the food pyramid represented. A balanced diet helps us to feel healthier and be more athletic. I like playing sports and feeling healthy, and so I eat a balanced meal like my PE teacher taught me to.
Being healthy means a lot of things, including paying attention to what you eat. Even though I like pizza and hamburgers, I care a lot about animals. I don’t want to see them mistreated. Throughout this project I have learned a lot about food ethics and food itself. For example, cows in industrialized farms are usually cramped and crowded together. I learned about how badly they are treated so that we can get cheap beef. This really bothered me. Not only does cheap meat affect your health, but animals are mistreated and so is the land. These are big consequences. These are things that I do not agree with.
Usually when we call someone a “picky eater”, it means that they will only eat things like pizza rolls and chips. I used to be like that. My parents called me a picky eater all the time. Because of what I’ve learned about during this project, I’ve decided that my food ethic is to be a picky eater. What I mean by that is I want to be picky about what I eat and where it comes from. From now on, I will get meat products from local ranches and farmers markets. James Ranch in Durango is a great local ranch that I learned a lot from. They treat their animals well, and they grow their produce organically and without a lot of processing.
Paying attention to where you get your food from is beneficial for lots of reasons. Eating quality food means more nutritional value for the body which also means that my diet is more balanced. It also means that the money I spend on food goes to people who agree with my food ethic. If I continue to spend money on cheap meat, animals will continue to get mistreated. But, if I spend my money on good meat, animals will be treated well. That’s important to me. I’m picky. I want to be a picky eater. After all, you are what you eat.
